INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT

Focus

An important field of specialisation is in spatial economic aspects, i.e. the integration of spatial planning aspects with economic development principles and as such providing specialist inputs for Spatial Development Frameworks. This brings to the fore an array of specialised urban-economic techniques. The end product successfully integrates economic, property and spatial planning principles.

Economic market forces represent the rationale for development, may it be financially, environmentally, socially or infrastructurally driven. Economic analyses form the crux of development planning, since the economic indicators specify definite guidelines for implementation and decision-making.

Approach

The approach that Urban-Econ follows is based on the integration of the various components of development economics, namely economic market focus, spatial aspects, sustainable planning and strategic development facilitation. Economic development opportunities are identified, spatial planning parameters drawn up and implementation guidelines specified in terms of facilitating actions.

An appraisal of the current situation in the area of study is undertaken to identify opportunities for socio-economic and economic development and interpret these as opportunities for development serving as input to spatial plans. Key aspects usually addressed include:
  • Economic projections and strategies
  • Demographic trends and projections
  • Social needs and projections.
These key deliverables are integrated and interpreted in terms of future economic and social activities and facilities and represented as future land, space and resource requirements. Specific strategy and policy guidelines are formulated to most efficiently unlock the local development potential.

The value of a robust and updated demographic, socio-economic and economic development profile for an area is to provide a sound and scientifically determined base for projections to inform future development needs as a basic input and determinant for Spatial and Master planning. Such a profile will thus provide the basis for evaluating and revising the goals, objectives and targets of development planning.
