The Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) as a group of economic activities can be regarded as the link between the two economies as postulated in the South African Economy, namely the first and second economies. SMMEs are often the only viable vehicle by which the lower income groups in the economy can gain access to economic opportunities.

The promotion of Small businesses to prepare for their efficient absorption into the mainstream economy can be regarded as one of the most effective instruments in promoting local economic development. Urban-Econ focuses on the upliftment of the SMME element in each economic sector to ensure sustainable development as well as adhering to the empowerment objectives of government.

Urban-Econ gives particular attention to the support and promotion of existing SMMEs as well as the establishment of new SMMEs, thus building on existing advantages and strengths but also expanding the small business economy through new opportunities. Some of the most effective measures in supporting the SMME sector are:
  • Pursuing real market opportunities
  • Establishing networking linkage fora
  • Mentorship and skills training
  • Funding access
  • Aftercare and support.
It is also important to make distinction between the various categories of SMMEs, since each have different business focus, distinguishing market indicators, operational circumstances as well as legislative conditions, to name a few. At least the following groups need to be mentioned:
  • SMMEs (small, medium, micro, survivalist)
  • Cooperatives
  • Informal enterprises
Urban-Econ is regarded as an expert in the developmental issues related to the second economy and in this regard the firm’s involvement in analysing the second economy initiatives for the Gauteng & KZN Governments is a case in point.
