TRANSPORT STUDIES

|
Focus
The focus of economic development inputs for the transport sector is to provide economic and development information and investigate development potential and opportunities which could impact on future economic performance with specific spatial implications. These would ultimately affect the demand for transportation infrastructure and services.
Approach
Sound and scientifically determined baseline information to inform future development needs and projections serves as a basic input and determinant for transportation planning over the long term. Economic and social activities and facilities need space which increases over time as the activities grow and must be represented as future land, space and resource requirements. Its growth and development are directly dependent on servicing a specific market segment or catchment area. Access, through road, rail and other modes of transport plays an important role as to the size and nature of these market segments and the efficient input supply mechanism.
Spatial economic modelling linked to land-use planning is used to simulate different transport options where land-use patterns and transportation requirements are integrated in such a manner that optimal forward planning solutions can be tested. The aspects that are generally, being addressed include the following:
- Type and location of land-uses.
- Nature of the settlement patterns.
- Economic production increases.
- Local multiplier effects.
- Changes in municipal rates.
- Bulk services contributions.
|
|
- Intensity of land-use (densities).
- Growth nodes and corridors.
- Employment creation.
- Extent of increased income flows.
- Changes in the local tax base.
- SMME development.
